Safety starts in the product
- A visible Report flag on public posts, polls, voice replies, profiles, and conversations.
- Blocking creates hard separation: blocked accounts cannot find, follow, react to, reply to, or open each other’s content.
- Private media storage and short-lived playback links.
- Upload reservations and rate limits that reject floods before unlimited media reaches storage.
- Moderation decisions backed by an audit record rather than UI-only labels.
Age separation
At launch, whatthe? is for people aged 16 and over. One private birthdate determines eligibility and assigns an internal teen or adult safety space. We do not display age badges or “verified” status. Teen and adult social spaces remain separated in the data and recommendation systems.
What moderators can do
- Review reported or selected voice content using authorised, short-lived playback.
- Remove content, issue warnings, and restrict posting.
- Temporarily suspend or permanently ban accounts.
- Preserve serious safety evidence and escalate urgent threats.
- Review appeals and maintain an audit trail of decisions.
If someone is in immediate danger
Contact local emergency services first. whatthe? is not an emergency service and cannot guarantee an immediate response. After contacting the appropriate local service, send our Safety team the account username, content link or identifier, time observed, and a short explanation. Do not forward illegal imagery or expose more personal information than necessary.
Responsible reporting
Reports should describe a genuine rule or safety concern. Coordinated false reports, threats through the reporting system, or attempts to expose another person’s private information may themselves lead to enforcement.
